Fishing Tip - Chumming

CHUM BUCKET

Chum is the term used for Attractor Bait in Saltwater - it consists of Chopped Sardines, Anchovies or other Fish Offal. Angling ethics forbid the use of animal products. Chum is used to attract fish into the Target area . In Australia it is called Berley. Another local name for it is "Lok".

There are a several techniques for using it.

1. From a boat:

  • Chum is thrown out by hand.
  • Chum is placed in a Citrus Bag and hung over the side.
  • Chum is mixed with Sea Water in a Bucket and poured into the water.
  • Chum is placed in a chum bucket which is mounted on the transom while trolling or Drift Fishing.(see sketch).

2. From the beach:

Minced Chum in a Citrus Bag is placed where a Rip (current) goes out to Sea placed just where the waves can lap at it. This will create a slick .
